How to Change the File Permission in Windows Server 2022

Windows Server 2022 offers intricate features when it comes to managing access and file permissions. It gives you unmatchable flexibility in assigning different sets of file permissions for different groups of users. Each user can have their own unique set of permissions.

In this tutorial, we’ll take a look at how you can change file permissions on Windows 2022 server.

Note
Note: You need to be an administrator to be able to change file and folder permissions.

Step 1

Log into your Windows system as an admin. If you’re not logged in as an administrator, most of the file and folder permissions will be inaccessible to you.

Step 2

Right-click on the file or folder which you want to change permissions for and Hit Properties.

Step 3

Go to the Security tab. The list of users and groups you see under Group or user names have the permissions to access the particular file or folder.

Note: It is quite possible that you don’t see a security tab in the Properties window. This is when you’re trying to set permissions for an external drive using a FAT32 file system. For setting the permissions on an external drive, it should be using the NTFS file system.

Step 7

Select the user or group that you want to add to the permission list and then Hit OK.

Step 8

Depending upon the level of access that you want this user or user group to have, select from the following permission options:

  • Full control: The user will be able to read, write, change or delete the file.
  • Modify: The user will be able to read, write and change the file.
  • Read & execute: The user will be able to read or run the selected file.
  • List folder contents: The user will be able to view the files in the selected folder.
  • Read: The user will be able to open the file.
  • Write: The user will be able to edit the file or create new files.

Step 9

It is possible that the area is grayed out and you can’t change the permissions for this object. In that case, go back to the Security tab, hit Advanced. Then, uncheck Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries for this object and Apply the changes. Finally, repeat step 8 for the object and Voila! You will have successfully changed the file and folder permissions for the specific user or group.

In this tutorial, we saw how you can change the permissions for a file or folder on Windows server 2022. Knowing this, you now have full control over who gets to access what on your server.
