In this tutorial, you’re going to learn the most convenient method to add a maintenance page on your site, without using a plugin.
Do You Know Which File Controls the Main Page of Your Site
If you know a little bit about HTML, you may have read about the “index” page/file. The file controls the layout of your website’s URL.
To add a coming soon, page, you need to replace this file with a new file. Let me show you how.
Follow these steps.
Step 1:
First of all, open your cPanel account and click on the file manager icon resides under the Files’ section.
Don’t be afraid if your web hosting offers a different cPanel. You may see a new design, but the options are similar.
Step 2:
If you have your primary domain, only one domain, on the server, make sure you open the root directory. When you open the file manager, by default, you may see the home directory.
Click on the public_html option from the vertical left-hand sidebar.
Step 3:
Now, you need to create a new file. Click on the File option showing on the main vertical navigation menu.
A popup appears where you need to fill out the file name. I must tell you that you need to create an HTML file. Choose the name of your choice.
In my example, I choose maintenance.html. Click Create New File.
Step 4:
Refresh the directory and scroll down to find your new file. Right-click and choose HTML Editor; you can also use the standard HTML Editor option from the main menu.
Step 5:
A popup appears, where you may see a warning message to make you aware that you may see mixed content if the URL isn’t the same as others, but don’t worry about it.
Click on the Edit button.
Step 6:
A new tab appears on your browser, where you have to design your coming soon, page. There are so many options to use; it’s just like Paint.
Once you finish designing the page, click on the Save button showing at the top-left corner of the toolbar.
Note: To make this work, you need to edit the .htaccess file.
I hope you know where to find .htaccess. Open the editor and add similar code.
#Newdefaultindexpage DirectoryIndexmaintenance.html
Don’t forget to replace the file name. Click on Save Changes, and you’re good to go. Your website starts showing a new coming soon, page.
Once you finish making changes to your WordPress website, you can remove this code delete the file you have created, and everything goes back to normal.
