I have used Digital Ocean for more than 2 years and I regret it.

And whenever I had a problem and opened a ticket, I only received automated responses and never heard from a real person answering my messages! In the end, one of my sites was hacked because of Digital Ocean and they didn't even bother to respond to me for anything at all!

I finally pulled the plug and changed to another hosting provider which I am happy with!

So, in short, if you are not a genius with IT, stay away from Digital Ocean. Or if you use, pray that you will not have any problems and will need technical support, because if you do, support will be nowhere to be found!

Stay away at all costs! You will regret it!

We are a mid-sized software company, and recently we decided to migrate several of our servers to US for faster loading times for our American users.
We heard good reviews about Digital Ocean and decided to use its dedicated serv...Read Moreers.
The “request” to open servers was declined as we are a new customer for them. The support agent explained that we need to wait for some billing cycles before we can use the more expensive servers. They suggested using some basic server (below our current servers performances) for some billing cycles and then try again.
I understand the risks of fraud, but, for us, having low-tier servers does not make any sense, as the performance would drop, also we have no wish to invest time into migrations twice - to low-tier, and then to higher tier. Neither we have time or wish to wait for the servers idling until billing cycles pass, to then apply for higher tier again (and perhaps be rejected again).
We tried to explain everything to the support once again, and offer to prepay a deposit for a few months, but the second ticket was closed without anyone reading it.

I don’t know why you even bother with marketing and ads if you just turn down the legit customers, approaching you with long-term contracts with potential for high revenues. We’ve been with our current provider for 4-5 years, now look for something bigger, and it won’t be digital ocean.

The 1 star is well deserved.

As a website owner and hosting expert, I have had the opportunity to test and evaluate a wide range of hosting providers over the years. DigitalOcean has constantly caught my attention so I decided to review it.

My first impression of the brand was that it’s a solid, no-frills option for those looking for a reliable and affordable cloud hosting solution. But, as I dug deeper into their services, I discovered that DigitalOcean offers much more than just a basic hosting package.

In this comprehensive review, I will share my personal experience and provide an in-depth analysis of DigitalOcean’s performance, features, customer support, and value for money. If you’re considering using their services, read on for an unbiased evaluation.

DigitalOcean Review

Founded in 2011, DigitalOcean has quickly grown to host over 2 million websites. DigitalOcean is headquartered in New York City, New York.

They offer a range of services, including managed cloud hosting, virtual machines, and storage solutions, including block storage, object storage, and distributed file systems.

However, it’s important to note that DigitalOcean is not BBB accredited and has a BBB rating of D-. Additionally, the company has a low rating on Trustpilot, with an overall rating of 2.1 out of 5 stars, based on 487 reviews. I would caution that there may be issues with customer support and satisfaction.

Rating Breakdown

Our experts at HostAdvice take into account various factors, such as performance, features, customer support, value for money etc. We then assign relevant scores to each host, allowing you to easily compare and choose the best option for your website.

With our standardized rating system, you can make an informed decision based on real numbers and data, rather than just a guess.

Parameter Score Why we gave this score
PRICES 8.0 They offer affordable & diverse pricing plans for all kinds of users. However, I’d give it 8.0 because it’s a bit difficult for a beginner to understand.
FEATURES 9.5 DigitalOcean offers CloudFlare, SSD servers, free SSL & migration, and a 1-click Apps marketplace.

However, I’d give it 9.5 because the features are not easily accessible.

PERFORMANCE  9.5 329 ms response time, 99.99% uptime, SSD servers and storage, and fast loading times. However, I’d give it 9.5 because the ideal response time is 100-200 ms.
USER FRIENDLINESS 8.0 The registration & Control Panel are user-friendly and easy to navigate. However, I’d give it 8.0 because some users may find the process of creating, configuring & managing droplets to be complex.
SUPPORT 7.5 They offer support options like email support, a ticketing system & a community forum, however, I’d give it 7.5 because phone support is currently unavailable & livechat is a premium support feature.

DigitalOcean Prices & Plans – 2023

Understanding the pricing of DigitalOcean can be tricky for some users because it uses a pay-as-you-go model, which means that the cost of hosting a website can vary depending on the amount of resources used.

Unlike the traditional hosting plans (shared, VPS, WordPress, etc) DigitalOcean offers Droplets, Kubernetes, Spaces, and Block Storage, each with different pricing structures and options which can be a little daunting for new users. It has flexible pricing plans, users can scale up or down their resources as their needs change.

DigitalOcean accepts different payment options like Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, PayPal, Google Pay, and Apple Pay and offers 60-day free usage credit of $200.

Droplets

Droplets are virtual machines that can be customized to meet your specific needs. They come in various sizes, with different amounts of RAM, CPU, and storage.

Plan name Space Bandwidth Panel Number of sites Starting Price (per month)
Basic 10 GiB N/A Custom panel Unlimited $4.00
General-purpose 25 GiB N/A Custom panel Unlimited $63.00
CPU-optimized 25 GiB N/A Custom panel Unlimited $42.00
Memory-optimized 50 GiB N/A Custom panel Unlimited $84.00
Storage-optimized 300 GiB N/A Custom panel Unlimited $131.00
Note: These are just the starting prices of each plan and you may adjust your plan as needed to ensure you are not paying for resources you don’t need.

The general-purpose plan of DigitalOcean droplet can provide a good balance of resources and cost, as it offers 2 vCPUs, 8 GiB of RAM, and 25 GB of SSD storage.

Tip: Droplets are best suited for users who prefer to manage their own infrastructure, and have a good understanding of how to set up and configure a server.

Kubernetes

Kubernetes is a container orchestration platform that allows you to deploy and manage containerized applications in a cluster.

Plan name Space Bandwidth Panel Number of sites Starting Price (per month)
Basic node 500 MiB N/A Custom panel Unlimited $12.00
CPU-optimized node N/A N/A Custom panel Unlimited $42.00
General purpose node N/A N/A Custom panel Unlimited $63.00
Memory-optimized node N/A N/A Custom panel Unlimited $84.00
Storage-optimized node N/A N/A Custom panel Unlimited $163.00
Note: These are just the starting prices of each plan and you may adjust your plan as needed to ensure you are not paying for resources you don’t need.

General purpose node is optimal for a wide range of workloads.

Tip: Best for users who want to automate the deployment, scaling, and management of their containerized applications.

Kubernetes is particularly useful for businesses who want to deploy and manage their applications on the cloud, and want more control over the infrastructure.

Managed Cloud Hosting (Cloudways)

If you want to host your website on DigitalOcean but want someone else to handle the management, scaling and security of the hosting environment, you can use a managed hosting platform like Cloudways.

Standard

Plan name Space Bandwidth Panel Number of sites Price (per month)
N/A 25 GB 1 TB Custom panel Unlimited $10
N/A 50 GB 2 TB Custom panel Unlimited $22
N/A 80 GB 4 TB Custom panel Unlimited $42
N/A 160 GB 5 TB Custom panel Unlimited $80

Premium

Plan name Space Bandwidth Panel Number of sites Price (per month)
N/A 25 GB 1 TB Custom panel Unlimited $12
N/A 50 GB 2 TB Custom panel Unlimited $26
N/A 80 GB 4 TB Custom panel Unlimited $50
N/A 160 GB 5 TB Custom panel Unlimited $96

Standard and premium packages offer a great third plan that I highly recommend to website owners. It comes with 80 GB SSD storage and 4 TB bandwidth, which is perfect for your growing business.

Tip: If you’re just starting to move your business to the cloud, DigitalOcean’s managed cloud hosting plans via Cloudways might be the perfect fit for you.

Features

  • Managed cloud hosting, Droplets, Kubernetes, Database etc
  • 1-Click Apps Marketplace (WordPress etc)
  • Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate
  • Built-in Spaces CDN
  • Free Migration
  • cPanel & WHM

I found their 1-click apps marketplace to be the most useful and unique feature. Even though you’re dealing with cloud hosting, it’s easy to set up WordPress, cPanel, and other applications in one click.

You can also enjoy the flexibility of customizing your server settings to match your application needs, while also benefiting from exceptional cost-effectiveness and reliability.

Performance

Performance is another crucial factor to consider when choosing a web host. Three key factors are important when it comes to testing performance: speed, loading time, and uptime.

It’s important to keep in mind that overall performance and uptime are not the same. DigitalOcean guarantees a 99.99% uptime, meaning that your website will be accessible 99.99% of the time, which is the current industry standard.

To determine the performance of DigitalOcean, I tested a website hosted on their platform ( https://www.repositioningcruise.com/ ) on GTMetrix.

Here are the results:

On GTMetrix, the website loaded fully in 1.0 s and had an impressive 329 ms response time. The site also gave 100% performance:

Level Of Support

Phone

DigitalOcean does not currently offer phone support as a means of customer assistance which is a huge disappointment.

Email

They offer email support for general questions or issues that are not urgent.

Online ticketing

They also 24/7 via ticketing system – you can submit a support ticket for assistance with any issues you’re experiencing with their platform. They also offer a SLA for their support services, which guarantees a response time within the given time frame for critical issues.

Live chat

Live chat is only available as a premium support feature.

DigitalOcean’s community is a great place to find answers to common questions and troubleshoot issues. I personally find this to be very effective in solving problems.

DigitalOcean Control Panel

The DigitalOcean Control Panel has a user-friendly interface that allows for easy management of all aspects of your DigitalOcean account, including droplets, domains, load balancers, and more.

Final: Digital Ocean brand review

It provides a centralized location to monitor and control your resources, as well as perform common tasks such as creating and configuring droplets, managing backups, and setting up monitoring and alerting.

Installing WordPress on DigitalOcean

Installing WordPress on DigitalOcean is easy. You just have to install pre-configured droplets from the “One-click apps” marketplace.

Optionally, you can add SSH keys, backups and monitoring.

Click the “Create Droplet” button to deploy the droplet.

Final: Digital Ocean brand review

Once the droplet is created, you can find the server’s IP address, username and password in the droplet’s detail page.

Add an email account with DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean does not offer email accounts as part of their standard offerings. DigitalOcean primarily focuses on providing infrastructure as a service (IaaS) which includes virtual servers (Droplets), block storage, and load balancers.

If you want to use email service, you can use third-party email providers like Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zoho Mail, etc. These providers offer email hosting services, and you can set up your custom email addresses with your domain.

Conclusion: Do We Recommend DigitalOcean?

I highly recommend DigitalOcean to anyone who wants to switch to cloud hosting. This company is well-known for its simplicity, affordability, and scalability. Like I mentioned above, it’s incredibly easy to manage and deploy resources on the cloud with DigitalOcean’s control panel. Their pricing is transparent and pay as you go, which makes it a great option for developers and small businesses who want to start small and scale as they grow.

One of the things that I find unique about DigitalOcean is that their infrastructure is built on top of SSDs which means you get fast disk I/O and network transfer. This makes it a great option for hosting web applications, databases, and other high-performance workloads.

They also have a wide range of pre-configured one-click apps for popular applications, such as WordPress, which makes it easy to deploy a new application quickly.

In terms of support, they have a robust knowledge base and tutorials that can help you to troubleshoot and resolve issues quickly. They also have a 24/7 support ticket system, which guarantees a response time of less than an hour for critical issues.

Overall, DigitalOcean is a great option for all the right reasons: they offer a user-friendly control panel, transparent pricing, and high-performance infrastructure, which makes it an ideal platform for cloud hosting.
