Webvisions was created in Singapore in 1996 and operated by providing co-location and hosting services all over Asia and opened their Singapore data center in 2000. Meanwhile, Iconz has been operating in New Zealand for over 20 years. In 2012, the major shareholder of Webvisions brought the two organizations together to provide services to Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore. Operation headquarters are in Singapore, with data centers located in several countries.
Uptime & Reliability
Very Reliable Hosting
As is incumbent with cloud computing or any distributed service, the chance of a single point of failure is greatly reduced; Icon-Webvisions appears to have several redundant links across their network to reduce the chance of outages.
The company also clearly has alternate power supplies, high-end HVAC facilities to provide maximum uptime for co-located servers.
In New Zealand, it appears that speeds we take for granted in the US aren’t always available, with business services showing “up to” 100 Mbs advertised. For New Zealand residential service, Icon-Webvisions provides ADSL over traditional phone lines, correctly stating that while this technology restricts land-line calls, many customers have mobile phones to circumvent any problems.
Features
Cloud & Co-Location Features
Today, Icon-Webvisions focuses on cloud computing, co-location and managed services for small and medium-sized businesses; Traditional web hosting is not part of their product line.
Cloud computing is hosted at several of their owned data centers with an emphasis on the “Infrastructure as a Service” (IaaS) and Icon-Webvisions stresses the advantages of the pay-as-you-go approach to using the cloud computing model.
While I’m not certain, it appears that New Zealand may have opted to focus on satellite and mobile technology for upgrades rather than their land-line infrastructure; as Icon-Webvisions offers ADSL service as “Naked Internet” where it may remove the ability to make calls while on line. The company does a good job at describing the dependency on local capabilities and clearly stating data limits. Broad-band is listed as a “best-effort” delivery with no guaranteed throughput.
Support
Good support 24/7
Icon-Webvisions states that they have 24/7 coverage at all of their physical locations as well as phone support being available likewise available around the clock. Email support is also offered 24/7; there are links to scheduled maintenance as well as “platform & network status” to allow customers to see if there are widespread issues prior to making a personal inquiry.
While I didn’t see a FAQ page, there was a customer portal that required a login and the support pages also had a “settings” link that gave fairly complete details on how to access virtual servers via VMware for Windows/Linux as well as instructions for accessing Linux via SSH.
For New Zealand, the support page includes residential usage reports for their home data service; there are also prices listed for data overages clearly available.
Pricing
Custom Prices Based on Specific Needs
With a focus on small to medium sized businesses, Icon-Webvisions does not list cloud, dedicated server or colocation prices. They do offer a “cloud readiness” survey for potential customers and rather than offer “one size fits all” approach, the firm has four basic categories of size and need pre-defined, then takes each customer’s needs and growth potential into account prior to determining a price. While this hints at the possibility of a higher price, the extra steps taken almost certainly address customer needs more effectively than using solely pre-selected packages.
Summary
Nice option to consider
Overall, Icon-Webvisions seems to be a sound choice for business use across the “Australasian” region, including Malaysia and China. Their approach to offering custom solutions should allow them to provide operational excellence for both current and future needs.
Pros:
- Customized services based on your specific needs
- Lots of options to choose from
Cons:
- No individual hosting options
- Prices are not easy to determine before creating custom plan
